I always thought that Hudson would be my first ER visit - that boy has no fear or any concept of his actual age and ability level. But it was my cautious Jake that changed our nice, peaceful, hang out at home Friday night to a 5 hour stay at Baylor Regional. He fell off of Emma's playset and broke his arm. Of course he was crying pretty hard...mostly out of panic I think. It was obviously broken from the way it looked and that freaked him out. He also got very upset that I wasn't crying. I go into supercalm nurse mode in those situations. But he calmed down in the car and as long as we explained everything to him in detail he was good. He even fell asleep waiting for the ortho to get there. They sedated him to set it in place and cast it, pumped him full of morphine and we were on our way. I have a new unbelieveable respect for friends that have been through much more uncertain medical situations...when you go in for a broken arm and they discuss the risks of respiratory distress and throw out the words "life support" it's hard to stay calm. Oh, and then they make you leave the room! But he was awesome...super tough and the doctors and nurse adored him. So a basketball season ends early, a baseball season will be skipped, but we are so thankful that he will be as good as new in about six weeks.
Waking up to a new cast...

Jake said a bunch of hilarious things throughout the night, but I cannot remember one of them. Should have written them down!!!

We can TOTALLY relate. Will broke his arm last year on Feb 4 - freaky. Anyhoo, the morphine-induced state, the resetting, the big honking cast. Totally there. Take lots of pictures and send him to school tomorrow with a fresh Sharpie marker (better sign your name FIRST, though!) And, give the Jake man a hug from us.
